How to Install Httpd on CentOS 5.7

Apache httpd is one of the most popular web servers and has a lot of features that make it very extensible and useful for many different types of websites.This steps has been tested on CentOS 5.7 with direct internet connection.

Simply run this command to install apache httpd service on CentOS 5.7:

    [[email protected] ~]# yum install httpd

Set httpd service to auto start at boot:

    [[email protected] ~]# chkconfig httpd on
    

Start and troubleshoot httpd start error:

    [[email protected] ~]# service httpd start
    
    Starting httpd: httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName
    

Check the server hostname or server fully qualified domain name:

    [[email protected] ~]# hostname
    CentOS57
    

Change the ServerName on line 265 to your hostname above.

    [[email protected] ~]# vi /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
    
      263 # redirections work in a sensible way.
        264 #
        265 ServerName CentOS57:80
        266
        267 #
    

Start the Httpd service using the following command :

    [[email protected] ~]# service httpd start
    Starting httpd:                                            [  OK  ]
    

or

    [[email protected] ~]# /etc/init.d/httpd start
    Starting httpd:                                            [  OK  ]
